Art historian Malou Solfjeld has since 2023 curated and facilitated guided tours for parents and babies through Copenhagen’s contemporary art scene.

In 2025 we are looking forward to welcome international families to the community.

Every week we meet in a new gallery for a personal and professional introduction to the exhibition in English.

Afterwards we hang out with our babies and talk about whatever is on our minds – from art and politics to sleep deprivation and experiences as being international in Denmark.

Why did Kunst på Barsel begin?

Hi there, my name is Malou. I’m a mother, an art historian a curator and art mediator. During my own parental leave in 2022, I was inspired to create a community for parents who wanted to meet around art.

I used to live 3 years in Spain, and since I came back to Denmark I’ve been surrounding myself with international friends living in Copenhagen. Before having kids I organized private dinners for newbies in the city, and now I wish to create baby-friendly art experiences for expat parents.

Everyone knows that it is not always easy to move to another country, and the fact of raising children in a culture that is not one’s own, must be so hard. Many of my international friends say that the hardest parts are:
1: Their own parents and their kids’ grandparents are far away – in another country.
2: The Danes already have their own old and established friend circles since high school, and are often too busy to make new friends.
3: Most international friends come and go, so it is hard to rely on long term friendships.

It takes a village

Kunst på Barsel was born out of the philosophy that it takes a village to raise a child. In today’s individualistic and competition-driven society, the village do not create itself naturally. I believe art is the most essential fabric of community building, and I have therefore invited parents and babies into the art world for the past two years.

Exactly like raising a kid is not something you should feel alone in, moving to a foreign country and integrating into a new culture, is definitely something you deserve a village to back you up in. Therefore I am so excited to introduce: Art for Expats – what initially started as a program for parents and babies, I have now decided to expand the program to also welcome expats without babies, who have time to join our events in the daytime.
